The Beginning of an Exciting Adventure
In 2010, I embarked on a journey that would redefine my understanding of leadership. Representing DPS Sharjah, I joined 100 students on an ambitious adventure trip to the breathtaking heights of Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand. At just 22 years old, I was entrusted with the role of group leader, a dream opportunity filled with the promise of fresh mountain air and the spirit of exploration.
A Scary Moment at the Airport
Our journey began from Dubai to Delhi. After completing immigration formalities, everything seemed smooth and well organized. Upon reaching our base near Tehri Resort, I counted the passports before handing them over to be secured in a locker, as we were travelling onward to Mukteshwar by road.
To my shock, one passport was missing.
Earlier, during the initial count, the numbers had appeared correct because one student’s old passport had been attached to the new one, making the total seem accurate. It was only at the resort that I realized one passport had been left behind at the Delhi airport immigration counter.
That moment was terrifying. As a young group leader responsible for students, the weight of accountability felt overwhelming.
Taking Quick Action
Without wasting any time, I informed the Head-in-Charge. After a brief discussion, I volunteered to return to the airport with the student. We immediately took a taxi and rushed back to Delhi airport.
The journey felt endless and stressful. Thoughts raced through my mind:
What if we don’t find it? What if there are complications? What if the trip is disrupted?
At the immigration office, we explained the situation. After careful verification and checking their records, the officials finally handed over the passport.
The relief I felt at that moment is something I will never forget.
A Lesson in Leadership
That incident remains one of the scariest experiences of my career during a school trip. Yet it taught me powerful lessons-to stay calm under pressure, take immediate responsibility, act decisively, and never panic in critical situations.
Since then, I have accompanied students on more than 15 successful school trips. Thankfully, all subsequent journeys have been smooth, filled with learning, adventure, and beautiful memories.
More Than Just a Trip
The 2010 adventure to Mukteshwar was not just about trekking and sightseeing. It was about leadership, responsibility, and courage. Sometimes, unexpected challenges shape us into stronger individuals.
Even today, when I think about that day, I remember the fear-but more than that, I remember the strength it brought out in me.
