Reading is essential for those who aspire to rise above the ordinary. The more one reads, the more knowledge one acquires. Establishing a daily reading habit is a transformative and life-enriching pursuit that allows a person to travel the world without moving their feet. Yet, inculcating reading habits in children can sometimes be challenging. In today’s technologically advanced world, many children are more inclined to browse screens or listen to voice assistants rather than read books.
I, too, faced a similar challenge with my younger daughter. There was a time when I would say, “Let’s read a story together,” and she would quickly reply, “Can I just watch one video instead?” I remember gently telling her, “Books can show you a bigger world than any screen.” She would smile, but the excitement was not quite there.
However, things began to change after she joined Delhi Private School (DPS). One afternoon, she came home holding a book from the school library and said excitedly, “Mama, can I read this to you?” That moment truly touched my heart. As she read aloud, pausing to ask the meanings of new words, I could see her confidence gradually building. I said, “You sound just like a storyteller!” and she beamed with pride. That small conversation filled me with immense hope.
Thanks to the school’s beautiful and time-honoured library culture, my child has developed a regular reading habit. She now eagerly looks forward to her library periods and often discusses the stories she reads. I have noticed a significant improvement in her vocabulary and expression since she joined the school, which fills us with optimism for her future.
As Edmund Burke wisely said, “To read without reflecting is like eating without digesting.” The school’s initiatives, such as Achieve3000, IXL, reading assessments, and various quizzes, further encourage children to reflect, analyse, and strengthen their vocabulary and comprehension skills.
I am truly grateful to the Almighty, the school authorities, and the dedicated teachers for their continuous guidance and support in nurturing not just readers, but confident and thoughtful learners.
