Tring tring… call from extension 101! The familiar voice of Mr. Ahamed rings out, “Ma’am is calling you!” I get up from my seat and stride (well, cautiously tiptoe) toward the door of the Principal & Director — little did I know, it was the start of the most exhilarating ride of my career.
They say when God closes one window, He opens another door… and for me, that door led straight into the “Lion’s Den.” Almost ten years ago, I stepped onto the campus of Delhi Private School, Sharjah, with a resume in hand and hope in my heart — and walked out that day officially a proud DIPSITE!
A couple of months later, I was told that I’ve been transferred to Principal Vandana Marwaha’s office as her Personal Assistant. Exciting? Absolutely. Daunting? Even more. I still remember her enigmatic look in my direction on my first day and thought, “Why me, and what now?” Till then, I had only been privy to her sounds more than her sight — now, I was stepping into her world up close!
It didn’t take long to understand. Working with her is a daily masterclass in energy and innovation. She’s quick on her feet, brimming with ideas, and always eager to learn, adapt, and implement.
The school day for Ma’am begins by 6:30 a.m…she’s already on the green field, briskly walking – possibly round two of her morning workout, greeting early arrivals with a radiant smile and teasing the latecomers with, “Why are you late today?” None can escape her razor-sharp sight!!
Fear soon gave way to confidence as I realized that behind that mighty roar lies a huge heart, strong lungs (thank you, fitness regime!), a wicked sense of humor, and a warmth that reaches everyone – from senior leaders to the grassroot staff.
Since then, life at school has been like a roller coaster – thrilling highs, sudden plunges, and nonstop adrenaline. My interview included a practical communication exercise, and a cheeky Shah Rukh Khan reference might just have sealed the deal – little did I know then, that it was a fun nod to her well-known passion for movies.
Two things, however, haven’t balanced in our equation! Her dedication to fitness hasn’t quite rubbed off on me – I’m still traversing the path from thought to action – (Sshh : All Fitness Regime sessions are conveniently missed).
And her golden habit of preparing well in advance contrasts sharply with my last-minute ways, which have given her many a nerve-racking moment. At times, her drawn-out, “Lakshmiiiiiii…” makes me promise myself not to repeat it and test her patience… yet habits, as they say, die hard! Between the Shah Rukh Khans, Mails, Meetings, Policies, and SPEA, we’re still working on it, like a chemical equation waiting to balance perfectly!
I’m often asked what it’s like to work with the Lion. While I’m hardly the proverbial mouse, I would say it’s a privilege – every roar is a lesson, every challenge a spark, and every day, an adventure worth telling.
And now… it’s me calling “101” and asking if Ma’am is in to walk up and meet her!!
Good Morning Ma’am – What’s on your schedule for the day??
